Statements from MDP Chair Hertel and Vice Chair Roberson

DETROIT — Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:

“Mike Rogers is Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidate for Senate, a rubber stamp for Trump’s toxic agenda, and a corrupt politician looking out only for himself. The Michigan Democratic Party stands united and fully behind Abdul El-Sayed, a proven, committed fighter for Michigan’s working families. Haley Stevens’ decision to campaign with Rogers—a man who has repeatedly sold out Michigan’s working class, wants to pass a national abortion ban, and has pledged to be a loyal vote for Trump’s agenda—shows that she has abandoned everything she claims to care about. We reject the attempts by Stevens and bad-faith actors to divide our party and undermine our momentum, and will not allow these eleventh-hour distractions deter us.”

“We are laser-focused on winning on Tuesday so we can lower costs for Michigan families, put an end to the corruption coming out of Washington, deliver a crucial check on the chaos of the Trump administration, and finally put Michigan first.”

Michigan Democratic Party First Vice Chair Portia Roberson released the following statement:

“Michigan Democrats chose our nominee in August. Two days before the most important Senate race in the country, it appears as if Congresswoman Haley Stevens chose to spend Sunday morning in a Detroit church where the Republican candidate was making his pitch, rather than supporting the Democratic ticket.

“Black voters in Detroit don’t need to be told who is fighting for them. Mike Rogers is running on Donald Trump’s agenda, and we are well aware of his voting record while in Congress. It is deeply disappointing that a candidate who spent fourteen years in Washington, earning a 33 percent rating from the NAACP, now expects to be welcomed into our sanctuaries as a friend. Our community remembers how he voted when it counted. Any Democrat who has ever asked for OUR votes owes it to this community to stand clearly against him. Disagreements inside our party are settled at the ballot box, and they were.

“On Tuesday, Michigan Democrats are voting for Abdul El-Sayed.”
