Sen. Hertel and Michigan Doctors Sound Alarm on Mike Rogers’ Agenda for Cutting Medicaid and Threatening Rural Hospitals

LANSING — On Wednesday, August 27th, the Michigan Democratic Party held a press call featuring state Senator and Health Policy Committee Chair Kevin Hertel, Harris Family Health founder Dr. Aisha Harrisemergency medicine physician Dr. Warren Lanphear and family medicine physician Dr. Lauren Snyder to discuss the consequences of failed GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers’ toxic agenda for cutting Medicaid, slashing coverage for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders, and risking rural hospital closures throughout the state. View footage from the event here.

“Mike Rogers is campaigning on Medicaid cuts that put hundreds of Michiganders in danger of losing their healthcare and risk rural hospital closures throughout the state,” said state Senator Kevin Hertel, Chair of the Senate Health Policy Committee. “Mike Rogers’ toxic agenda represents a fundamental threat to our families’ health and economic security and Michigan’s rural communities.”

“Mike Rogers’ support for these Medicaid cuts is a moral failure,” said Dr. Aisha Harris, a family medicine physician from Flint and founder of Harris Family Health. “As physicians, we took an oath to ‘do no harm.’ Mike Rogers’ policies violate that fundamental principle. The Medicaid cuts he supports will harm patients, harm families, and harm our communities.”

“Mike Rogers’ reckless agenda will drive up costs for Michigan families while padding the pockets of millionaires like himself,” said Dr. Warren Lanphear, an emergency physician from Grand Rapids and a past president of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians. “Our patients and our communities can’t afford Mike Rogers’ Medicaid cuts. That’s why we must reject him again, just like we did in 2024.”

“Mike Rogers has shown us exactly who he is: a politician willing to sacrifice rural hospitals and the communities they serve so millionaires like himself can get even richer,” said Dr. Lauren Snyder, a family medicine physician from Grand Rapids. “We cannot—and will not—let him take that agenda to the U.S. Senate.”
