RELEASE: Republican Cuts to Medicaid to Devastate Northern Michigan

Detroit News: Michigan Medicaid program faces $15B hit as ‘big beautiful bill’ affects rural counties

LANSING – Donald Trump and Republicans’ spending bill is set to devastate communities across Michigan as the state’s Medicaid program faces a $15 billion hit and hospitals brace for “impacts not only to patients, but also employees, due to Trump’s spending bill.” Unfortunately, rural areas and the Upper Peninsula are set to be hit especially hard by these cuts as Republicans rob them of the funding their hospitals rely on.

Every single Michigan Republican in Congress — including Jack Bergman, whose 35,275 Michiganders in his district stand to lose health care coverage— voted for this disastrous bill, and Republicans Mike Rogers, Tom Leonard, Aric Nesbitt, and Matt Hall have expressed their support. In regions like the Upper Peninsula, rural hospitals are going to be forced to shut down as they lose the funding they rely on, meaning thousands of jobs will be cut and even more Michiganders will be left without any accessible health care.

And let’s be clear, these cuts are going to affect everyone. Even for those not on Medicaid, without nearby clinics and hospitals, their private insurance will be just as useless as those who lost coverage entirely, with no doctors available to see them.
