RELEASE: Michigan Dems Slam Speaker Hall for Holding Veterans’ Affairs Bills Hostage in State House Ahead of Veterans Day

Despite these bipartisan bills all passing the state Senate, MAGA Matt Hall once again refuses to do his job and present them in the state House

LANSING — After Michigan Democrats in the state Senate passed six bills to support our troops and veterans with bipartisan support, these bills are now being held up by MAGA Matt Hall, thanks to his continued refusal to do the job he was elected to do. SB 207, 208, 215, and 540-542 would all help veterans and troops access the benefits they deserve like tuition assistance, child care assistance, and health and financial support.

“MAGA Matt Hall is standing in the way of Michigan’s troops and veterans receiving the benefits they deserve after serving our country and fighting for our freedoms,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel. “Michigan Democrats passed these bills with bipartisan support to help fund and expand veterans’ assistance programs, yet Hall is holding these bills hostage and playing political games with Michigan veterans’ livelihoods.

“Hall has already held nine bills up after multiple courts ruled that they should be sent to Governor Whitmer’s desk, but this is a new low, even for him. He is an embarrassment, and Michigan Democrats will do everything in their power to support the troops and veterans he is abandoning.”

Here are the bills that Hall is holding up:

  • SB 207/208
    • Creates the Michigan Veterans Coalition Fund to pay for a newly established grant program for expenses related to veteran service operations, including: providing advocacy and assistance in obtaining federal VA health, financial, or memorial benefits for which they are eligible.
  • SB 215
    • Adds to the list of conditions that must be met to state if the person is seeking to receive compensation for a service in connection with an initial disability benefits claim
  • SB 540-542
    • Create the Michigan National Guard member benefit fund, which will be used for both funding the Michigan National Guard Tuition Assistance program and the newly created Michigan National Guard Child Care Assistance Program. The Child Care Assistance Program will be used to help eligible National Guard members cover the cost of child care during weekend and annual drill.
