RELEASE: Michigan Dems Slam Barrett for Voting Against ACA Credits

Despite the credits helping hundreds of thousands of Michiganders access health care, Tom Barrett once again chose Trump’s reckless agenda over working families

LANSING — During yesterday’s House vote to expand the Affordable Care Act (ACA) credits, Michigan Republican Congressman Tom Barrett once again betrayed his constituents and voted against the tax credits that help countless Michiganders access affordable health care. In response, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:

“After voting to gut Medicaid, Tom Barrett decided to make the Republican health care crisis even worse and vote against the ACA tax credits that help so many Michigan families get health insurance.

“Tom Barrett is an embarrassment to the Michiganders he represents; every time he’s had the chance to help them, he’s prioritized Donald Trump’s agenda over the needs of working families in his district. Michiganders won’t forget this betrayal at the ballot box in November.”

WLNS: Tom Barrett among ‘no’ votes for extending health care subsidies

  • The U.S. House passed legislation on Thursday, 230-196, that would extend expired health care subsidies for those who get coverage through the Affordable Care Act.
  • A handful of Republicans signed on to a so-called “discharge petition” to force a vote, despite objections from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). The bill will head to the Senate, where similar bipartisan pressure is mounting, though the chamber has already rejected the package.
  • Democrats say the vote is a victory that validated the risky decision to force a government shutdown in October.
  • “I applaud House Democrats and Michigan’s Democratic delegation in Congress for taking action today to extend ACA subsidies and lower health care costs for Michigan families,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said in a statement. “This is what leadership looks like—putting working families first and fighting to make health care affordable.”
  • The 17 Republicans who voted to extend health care subsidies joined all Democrats in voting yes. Michigan Republicans, including Rep. Tom Barrett of Charlotte, voted against extending subsidies.
