LANSING — Today, the state Senate Housing and Human Services Committee heard testimony from experts and community members about the impact on our most vulnerable families of congressional Republicans’ proposed cuts to food assistance. In response to the hearings, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel released the following statement:
“These cuts to food assistance are an abomination. How cruel do you have to be to take food away from hungry children and families? Right now, Republicans are endangering thousands of Michigan children’s health and well-being so they can give another handout to billionaires — it’s outrageous.
“Cutting food assistance means children do worse in school, victims are forced to return to abusers to feed themselves, and parents are forced to choose between paying for groceries and housing their families. Republicans should be ashamed to go after hardworking Michiganders and their pocketbooks, and Michigan Democrats are going to fight back against this Billionaire-First budget every single day.”
