Race to the Right: John James Grovels at Mar-a-Lago, Perry Johnson Blitzes Airwaves With Pictures of Trump

Johnson’s ad spending has reached nearly $13 million

LANSING — As Donald Trump’s disastrous policies harm Michigan’s economy, the Republican candidates for governor are continuing to race to the right in their messy and chaotic primary, with John James spotted groveling at Mar-a-Lago this weekend while self-funder Perry Johnson is blitzing the airwaves with ads featuring pictures of him and Trump.

MIRS News reported that James was “photographed at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday evening at the same time President Donald Trump was at the Florida estate, according to a Facebook post by a socialite.” Trump hosted a MAGA, Inc. fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s ad buy has reached $12.7 million, according to MIRS NewsGongwer News Service reported earlier this month on Johnson’s ad “Make Michigan Great Again,” which features pictures of Johnson and Trump. Johnson is also currently spending $1.5 million on an ad calling out James for being a “career politician.”

“Donald Trump has wrecked Michigan’s economy and caused prices to skyrocket, but John James and Perry Johnson are tripping over themselves to curry favor with Trump as they try to get his endorsement,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “No matter who wins this messy and expensive primary, it’s clear that they’ll always put Trump’s interests ahead of Michigan.”
