On Dobbs Anniversary, A Recap of the Republican Gov. Candidates’ Extreme Anti-Abortion Positions

LANSING — Today, on the third anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, we’re recapping the Republican gubernatorial candidates’ extreme and out-of-touch positions on reproductive rights:

  • John James has compared compared abortion to “genocide,” opposed abortion in cases of rape and incest, and said he is “100% pro-life” and supported Roe v. Wade being overturned. James also has an A+ rating in Congress from the extreme anti-choice group SBA Pro-Life America.
  • Tom Leonard, while running for attorney general, said he would enforce the now-repealed 1931 abortion ban and even came out against the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, which barred states from banning contraceptives, with Leonard saying in 2022, “This case, much like Roe v. Wade… trampled upon states’ rights.”
  • As Attorney General, Mike Cox defended abortion restrictions and was previously endorsed by anti-choice Right to Life of Michigan, who spent more than $70,000 supporting him.
  • Aric Nesbitt voted against repealing the 1931 abortion ban, in addition to several other anti-abortion policies

And of course, there’s potential candidate Tudor Dixon, who opposes abortion rights even in cases of rape or incest.

“The entire Republican gubernatorial field supports banning abortion and each candidate has staked out the most extreme positions possible,” said Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “Michiganders have been clear in their support for reproductive rights in the wake of the Dobbs decision, but if elected, each of these extreme Republicans would work to restrict reproductive rights and drag Michigan backwards.”
