LANSING — In a new poll commissioned by the Detroit Regional Chamber, who is supporting his campaign, Mike Duggan’s support is sinking—despite benefiting from millions in outside spending—and Duggan is now drawing more votes from Republicans than Democrats.
The Detroit News reported it succinctly: “Mike Duggan’s campaign for governor slips in new statewide general election poll paid for by his supporters.”
Richard Czuba of the Glengariff Group, who conducted the poll, wrote that Duggan’s percentage of “Leaning Democratic voters has fallen from 49.0% to 17.0%.” Notably, Czuba said that “Mike Duggan is now hurting the Republican candidate more than the Democratic candidate by eight points.” In the new poll, Duggan is taking 24.3% of Republican voters—but only 16.3% of Democratic voters.
Beyond Duggan’s collapsing numbers, Donald Trump is deeply unpopular in Michigan, with 57% of participants saying they disapproved of the job Trump has been doing as president. Independent voters now disapprove of President Trump’s performance by a 3-1 margin.
Last month, an independent poll from the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University also showed Duggan locked in third place with no movement. Put Progress First, a pro-Duggan dark money group funded by his wealthy allies, has spent approximately $12 million so far to boost his campaign to no success.
Duggan’s campaign strategy has left many “scratching their heads” as he’s been “echoing conservative rhetoric,” attacked Democrats, and even complained about Rick Snyder’s harmful policies being repealed. Duggan has defended Trump’s cuts to Medicaid, deflected questions about Trump’s toxic tax law while his campaign is being funded by MAGA donors and prominent Republicans, and his dirty dirt scandal is now under FBI investigation.
“The more voters learn the truth about Mike Duggan’s record of taking MAGA cash and bowing down to Trump, the more his polling numbers drop,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “Whether it’s backing Donald Trump’s cuts to Medicaid, cozying up to corporations that are jacking up our costs, or deflecting on his dirty dirt scandal, Duggan continues to show that he can’t be trusted.”
