NEW: Mike Rogers Mocks People “Screaming and Thumping Their Chest” Over Skyrocketing Gas Prices

Price Hike Mike: Financial strain put on Michiganders due to the Iran War was “absolutely not” avoidable

LANSING — Out-of-touch GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers complained in a new interview about people who were “screaming and thumping their chest” over skyrocketing gas prices, continuing his streak of dismissing cost concerns. Doubling down on his support for the Iran War, Rogers also told WDIV that the financial strain put on Michiganders as a result of the conflict was “absolutely not” avoidable.

Rogers’ remarks are the latest in a series of comments dismissing Michiganders’ concerns about paying more at the gas pump. At a recent campaign event, Rogers told a Michigander worried about skyrocketing gas prices “We’re gonna be fine, we got plenty of oil.”

  • [5:27] JASON COLTHORP, WDIV: The war in Iran. It could still be happening if you take office as a Senator, or some part of it could be. How do we get out of that, and where are you on the purpose the US has with this war?
  • MIKE ROGERS: So I think it is absolutely right to make sure that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon, and obviously that brought some costs […]
  • MIKE ROGERS: Remember, they’re already threatening to run the Straits of Hormuz, which would mean, my God, if they had the chance to do that, our gasoline would be eight bucks a gallon. Can’t let them do that. I’d like a quick solution to this, and as I said, what I think all the politicians who are screaming and thumping their chest and running around saying this is the whole cause of all your misery. […]
  • JASON COLTHORP, WDIV: Could the president have avoided all this just simply by not taking us out of the agreement that was with Iran back in 2018 and could have avoided this whole conflict?
  • MIKE ROGERS: Oh, absolutely not. I—that, that, the JPOA [sic]—
  • JASON COLTHORP, WDIV: That also guaranteed no nukes, though.
  • MIKE ROGERS: But you know what, the first thing that Iran said when the negotiators got there? Remember, we—
  • JASON COLTHORP, WDIV: In 2018?
  • MIKE ROGERS: They had already produced enough enriched uranium for 10 nuclear bombs, they weren’t following the JPOA [sic].
  • JASON COLTHORP, WDIV: I thought the US investigators said they were abiding by it.
  • MIKE ROGERS: No, there is no—I do not believe it.
