LANSING — As working families try to find a way to afford a three-day weekend amid spiking gas prices, MAGA Matt Hall is trying to raise taxes on services Michiganders rely upon and recreational activities.
This week, House Republicans passed bills to cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations — and their concept of a plan to make up the gap relies on raising taxes by $5 billion on recreational activities like golfing, boating, and going to museums. As the Detroit Free Press acknowledged, Hall’s proposal “to replace the lost revenue still need[s] to be worked out with the Treasury Department.” That means the Republican plan either results in cuts to critical services, local governments, and schools, or taxing working families in a slew of new ways.
“While Donald Trump makes everything more expensive for working families, people are looking for a weekend to forget how bad the economy is,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel. “Instead, MAGA Matt Hall wants to tax your weekends and make playing a round of golf, going to a museum, or enjoying a day on the boat more expensive. Rather than bringing working people relief, Michigan Republicans are focused on giving tax breaks for the wealthy and making working families foot the bill.”
