James and Huizenga are set to benefit personally from tax law they voted for
LANSING — Republican Reps. John James and Bill Huizenga are both set to have their taxes cut under D.C. Republicans’ deeply unpopular tax law, which they both voted for, even as it guts health care for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders, jack up prices even more, and threatens rural hospitals.
In a new report from the Institute on Taxation and Policy, “many lawmakers who were vocal supporters of this bill will see direct personal benefits while most of their constituents benefit little or will be worse off.” James will see a tax cut of up to $12,000 next year, while Huizenga will save up to $50,000.
James cast one of the deciding votes for D.C. Republicans’ tax law — and has now dodged questions on the cuts to health care and even kept the door open to ending Medicaid expansion entirely in Michigan.
“Michiganders across the state are struggling to make ends meet, but John James and Bill Huizenga voted to give themselves a hefty tax cut to line their own pockets,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel. “James, Huizenga, and their backers like the DeVos family are set to benefit while everyday Michiganders are feeling the effects of this disastrous tax law, with folks losing their health care and prices skyrocketing. John James and Bill Huizenga only care about lining their own pockets, not serving the people of Michigan.”
