ICYMI: Republican John Goldwater “Linked to Chinese Chemical Imports”

LANSING — Yesterday, the Detroit Metro Times reported that Republican state senate candidate John Goldwater has ties to companies connected to the Chinese Communist Party and that imported chemicals that “pose risks to human health or the environment.”

The Metro Times notes that Goldwater’s involvement with the chemical industry could “add to mounting questions about Goldwater’s business activities” and concerns over Goldwater’s priorities “could resonate in the 12th Senate District” where the incumbent state Senator Kevin Hertel “has emphasized efforts to protect Lake St. Clair and the surrounding waterways.”

Goldwater’s campaign did not respond to the Metro Times’ request for comment regarding his business connections.

Detroit Metro Times: GOP hopeful in Lake St. Clair district linked to Chinese chemical imports

  • Republican state Senate candidate John Goldwater’s business connections to China extend beyond a recently reported lawsuit accusing him of selling counterfeit food additives and evading tariffs on Chinese imports.
  • Import records obtained by Metro Times identify numerous Chinese suppliers doing business with two companies where Goldwater has held positions, including a chemical manufacturer identified as state-owned and another that has publicly promoted its ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
  • The records also identify shipments of chemicals that federal health officials and environmental organizations have warned can pose risks to human health or the environment.
  • Those concerns could resonate in the 12th Senate District, where Hertel has emphasized efforts to protect Lake St. Clair and the surrounding waterways.
  • The records add to mounting questions about Goldwater’s business activities that surfaced in September.
  • The Detroit News reported Sept. 27 on a lawsuit accusing Goldwater of involvement in selling counterfeit Chinese food additives and circumventing tariffs on imported products.
  • Goldwater’s campaign didn’t respond to our request for comment.
