ICYMI: MIGOP Drama Ensues as State Republicans Trash Bergman

Congressman Jack Bergman loses support from UP state lawmakers after making endorsement in 38th state Senate District race

LANSING — Michigan GOP state legislators Ed McBroom, Greg Markkanen, and Karl Bohnak are taking back their endorsements left and right from Congressman Jack Bergman after he endorsed a candidate for the 38th state Senate Republican primary, despite apparently promising otherwise.

Amidst the mud-slinging, MIGOP state Representatives have labeled Bergman a “carpetbagger”, “disloyal,” and “absent”––while Bergman fired back, saying they were “do-nothing establishment hacks.”

Michigan Advance: Bergman endorsement in U.P. state Senate race sees key lawmakers defect from his reelection bid

  • There was much drama brewing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Tuesday after a slate of up north lawmakers rescinded their endorsements of U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Watersmeet), after he endorsed former state Rep. Beau LaFave as he seeks a seat in the state Senate…
  • “Jack promised me he would not be endorsing in this race. I wish I could say l’m surprised that he lied to me or that this is out of character for my time working with Jack, but it’s not,’ McBroom said in a statement. “I’ve seen him be disloyal to local party members, interfere in races outside his district, stab fellow Republicans in the back, and even publicly attack me. Those were internal party matters. This time is different. This time, he straight up lied to me. Now he’s siding against the clear, best option for the U.P. I will not stand by silently while he undermines the work we have done for the U.P.”

My UP Now: UP legislators pull support for Jack Bergman following Senate candidate disagreement

  • The statement also called McBroom and his allies “do-nothing establishment hacks.” In an interview with Schyler Perkins, McBroom called Bergman and LaFave’s insults “inappropriate and unnecessary…”
  • He continued to present himself the U.P. candidate, accusing Rep. Dave Prestin of being one of “Lansing’s favorite politicians” and running a campaign fueled by Lansing donors.
