Under a year of the Trump administration, Americans have seen the largest number of layoffs nationally since 2009
LANSING — Today, Challenger, Gray & Christmas released a new report on the number of layoffs in the past year, which found that there were a whopping 29,435 layoffs in Michigan in 2025. Challenger also reported the number of layoffs in the past month and found there were a staggering 19,714 layoffs in Michigan in January 2026 alone.
Donald Trump and Michigan Republicans have wrought havoc on Michigan’s economy as Trump’s chaotic tariffs and disastrous economic policies raise costs for working families and small businesses, and inflation remains high.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is in denial about his faltering economic record, and Michigan Republicans are in lockstep with Trump’s toxic agenda as costs skyrocket and layoff notices surge to record levels.
In response, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:
“One year into his second term, Donald Trump and Michigan Republicans have completely wrecked Michigan’s economy. Because of Trump’s toxic economic policies, there were more than 29,000 layoffs last year, and nearly 20,000 Michiganders lost their jobs last month alone, while thousands more are struggling under skyrocketing costs, high inflation, and soaring health care costs.
“Meanwhile, Trump is refusing to change course, and every single Michigan Republican is wholeheartedly backing his reckless agenda. He is doubling down on billionaire-first policies and doing nothing to make life more affordable for everyday Michiganders who are suffering under this administration.”
