What They’re Reading: President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal to Deliver Billions of Dollars, Good-Paying Jobs to Michigan

LANSING — From Detroit to Grand Rapids to Traverse City, Michiganders are picking up their newspapers and reading about how President Biden and Michigan Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow led the Senate in passing the largest long-term investment in our nation’s infrastructure in a century.

As news article after news article has cited, President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will bring thousands of good-paying jobs to Michigan, create new business opportunities, boost manufacturing of electric vehicles, and prepare America to be even more economically competitive than it was before. Thanks to President Biden and Democrats leadership, America’s infrastructure can begin building back better.

Here are some of the stories Michiganders are reading today:

From NBC Detroit: “If the bill gets final approval Michigan would get a sizable chunk of money. The bill provides $8 billion to repair and renew roads and shore up Michigan’s often failing bridges. Another $1 billion would go to fix rail and mass transit issues. There is also money for Great Lakes cleanup, funds Michigan Sen. Gary Peters worked into the package…There is also more than $7 billion going to increase the number of electric vehicle charging stations designed to boost electric vehicle acceptance.”

And here’s what local leaders are saying about how President Biden’s infrastructure deal will bring new jobs to Michigan:

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer: “It will create millions of good-paying jobs; fix crumbling roads and bridges; help us build a clean, resilient energy grid; bolster public transportation; deliver clean drinking water to millions of families, and ensure every home has access to high-speed internet.”

Sen. Gary Peters: ““This bipartisan infrastructure legislation is a big win for Michigan. It’s an investment in creating good-paying jobs, helping local businesses grow and upgrading our aging and crumbling infrastructure. This bill will help ensure Michigan can continue building back better—by repairing our roads and bridges, expanding access to high-speed internet and helping communities address rising water levels, shoreline erosion and flooding. This is a great step, and we must keep working to make sure this legislation is signed into law.”

Sen. Debbie Stabenow: “There is so much in this infrastructure bill that is good for Michigan. It starts with the single-largest investment in the Great Lakes, a key part of our Michigan way of life. Additionally, this bill finally makes the investments we need to fix our roads, replace lead pipes and tackle our spotty internet service. It’s going to create jobs and strengthen our Buy American laws to ensure that American tax dollars are spent on American products and services. Bottom line: this bill is a win for Michigan.”

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05): “The bipartisan infrastructure bill delivers billions to improve Michigan roads, rebuild bridges and replace lead pipes. Investing in our infrastructure will make life better for millions of Michiganders, create good-paying union jobs and position the United States to win the twenty-first century against our competitors like China. This bipartisan bill is the largest long-term investment in our infrastructure and competitiveness in nearly a century, and I applaud President Biden and Democrats in Congress for their leadership on this bill.”

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes: “Today, on President Biden’s 203rd day in office the Senate Democratic caucus passed historic infrastructure legislation. Infrastructure has bedeviled previous administrations – despite near-weekly promises – and some of the loudest voices in the Republican party campaigned against this agreement, but President Biden, along with Senators Peters and Stabenow, delivered where others had failed.”

As the infrastructure bill moves to the U.S. House of Representatives, the Michigan Democratic Party is once again calling on Michigan Republicans Jack Bergman, Bill Huizenga, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar, and Tim Walberg to follow the lead of 19 Republican Senators in supporting once-in-a-generation investments in Michigan’s infrastructure.
