Weekly Roundup: While Trump Flops in Visit to Michigan, Democrats Are The Ones Fighting for Workers

After a weekend of radical right-wing propaganda by the MIGOP, Donald Trump’s visit to Michigan cemented the Republican Party’s deep hypocrisy on every issue that matters to Michiganders

LANSING — From a weekend of MAGA extremism on Mackinac Island to a Trump visit filled with bald-faced lies to workers – it was another week of Republicans showing just how out of touch they are with Michiganders’ values.

While Michigan Democrats up and down the ballot have been out in full force to hold Trump accountable for his extensive record of selling out middle-class workers, MAGA Matt Hall’s GOP was busy with party infighting, calls for Karamo’s resignation as MI GOP chair, and events that promoted far-right conspiracies at their extremist “leadership” conference.

Trump, in a desperate attempt to court union members in Michigan, had the brilliant idea to visit a non-union plant where he lied over and over to try and erase his heinous record on workers. No matter what he says, Trump doesn’t care about workers or our middle class, and he will sell them out at every chance he gets.

While President Biden stood strong with autoworkers on the strike line this week and has continually proven himself to be the most pro-worker president in history, Republicans once again fell flat on their faces front.

Check out a coverage wrap-up from this week:

All weekend, Republicans made complete fools of themselves at the GOP Mackinac conference that devolved into a who’s who of Republican extremism, proving once and for all how far the MIGOP has fallen from its once-respected place in Michigan politics:

  • The nationally known speakers of past years, who have included then-Vice President Mike Pence, then-U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, were not to be found this weekend. Instead, attendees heard from Jim Caviezel, an actor who portrayed Jesus in the film “The Passion of the Christ”
  • When longtime conference attendees ran into each other in the corridors, they could be heard making comments like, “I don’t recognize anybody here.”

Meanwhile, on the frontlines of the fight for growing the middle class, President Biden showed what real solidarity looks like as he joined autoworkers on the strike line. The contrast between Trump’s and Biden’s records on workers could not have been clearer:

Then, Trump descended on Michigan and pretended to care about union workers while speaking at a non-union plant. Michigan Democrats were out in full force to hold Trump accountable for parachuting into our state and spewing lie after lie about his “support” for workers. We know the autoworkers who are righteously standing day in and day out on the strike line, fighting for the wages, benefits, and job protections that they deserve, and can see who actually has their backs in this fight:

  • “Before Trump was actually president, he was saying a lot of things that sounded really great,” said Michigan state Rep. Jason Morgan, a Democrat who represents a liberal district that includes part of Ann Arbor. “But when he actually got into office, he did the same old thing he has done throughout his career…none of his policies have actually benefited the people he told they would benefit.

  • But Democrats blasted Trump’s record on manufacturing. U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham, said while Trump had claimed to support union workers, he didn’t even go to a union facility.
  • During Trump’s four-year term, the number of jobs in vehicle and parts manufacturing in Michigan fell by 5% to about 166,000, according to the bureau’s tracking

Back in Lansing yesterday, as the Michigan Senate held a committee hearing on critical gun safety legislation, a mobile billboard was stationed outside the Capitol playing videos to remind Michiganders of the violent past of House Minority Leader Matt Hall.

As a reminder, MAGA Matt Hall has opposed the majority of gun safety reforms that moved through the Legislature and was recently exposed for a disturbing history of violent and racially-tinged threats from when he was in college. This billboard is just another reminder that Hall has not explained himself or assured Michiganders that he is able to fairly evaluate legislation dealing with sensitive issues like harassment.

All in all, it was yet another week of MAGA Republicans showing how little they care about the middle class if it gets in the way of their radical agenda – this time with special guest Donald Trump on the scene too. But don’t worry, Michigan Democrats will keep working – with or without them – to make a fairer, brighter Michigan for everyone.
