Tudor Dixon’s Budget Plan Would Destroy Michigan’s Economy

While hundreds of thousands of Michiganders have already turned in their ballot and only just three weeks to go for a vast majority of others to make their decision on which gubernatorial candidate is the best choice to lead Michigan – Tudor Dixon is still hiding from voters and refusing to answer for her “piss-poor policy proposal” that would be detrimental to Michigan’s economy.

Dixon “absolutely” backs a plan that would gut $12 billion from critical services “as quickly as we possibly can.” Her plan would slash funding for roads, public schools, and would eliminate the primary funding source for Michigan State Police, threatening to cut over $500 million per year in law enforcement funding.

After she was asked how she would replace the $12 billion in revenue her plan would demolish, Dixon said “there is the opportunity for a tax swap” to increase the sales tax. Bought and paid for by special interests, it’s no surprise Dixon would reward her wealthy backers with a tax proposal that would “primarily benefit the wealthy” and leave working families to foot the bill with a higher tax on their everyday items.

Repealing the income tax, even over time, without a plan would:

  • Cut nearly $8 billion from the general fund, threatening funding for thousands of Michigan State Police and slashing nearly two-thirds from the main funding stream for the Departments of Health and Human Services, Corrections, and State Police, on top of half of all revenue for other critical departments. Dixon says she wants to bring jobs home to Michigan, but it’s looking a lot like she wants to cut the jobs that keep communities safe instead.
  • Slash $3.5 billion from the School Aid Fund, the state’s main funding source for public schools in line with her similarly disastrous agenda to convert Michigan to a school voucher system that would have reduced state investment in education by upwards of $500 million annually. Cutting education funding means students have less quality opportunities to learn and progress into the workforce. Our youngest Michiganders will bear the brunt of an underfunded education system, but Dixon doesn’t have a plan to solve that.
  • Eliminate $600 million in transportation funding and threaten additional federal funds secured with matching state dollars, which would undercut the state’s ability to keep making crucial repairs to road and bridges. If Michigan’s infrastructure isn’t invested in, Michigan won’t be able to compete with other states to bring investments and jobs into the state. Considering Dixon continuously opposes job creation, it’s no surprise that she’d put forward a plan that would drag Michigan’s opportunities backwards.

Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Alyssa Bradley released the following statement:

“Tudor Dixon dragged her family’s Michigan Steel business down, she’s failed Michigan’s auto industry by rejecting economic investments, and now she wants to drag the entire state back by defunding the resources they rely on – roads, education, and law enforcement. Michiganders can’t afford to be another bullet point on Tudor Dixon’s failed business resume.”
