LANSING — The Michigan Democratic Party is filing a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint against Tim Kelly for Congress for accepting contributions from DeVos family members that violate the Federal Elections Campaign Act (FECA). Tim Kelly is running against Congressman Dan Kildee in Michigan’s 5th Congressional District.
In the most recent campaign filing report from Tim Kelly for Congress, his campaign knowingly reported having accepted donations from Doug DeVos and Suzanne Cheryl DeVos that exceed the allowed dollar amount under federal law.
The Facts:
- According to the FEC website, on October 2, 2020, Doug DeVos gave two contributions to Tim Kelly for Congress in the amount of $2,800.00 each
- The total contribution from Doug DeVos to Tim Kelly’s campaign committee is now $5,600.00, exceeding contribution limits
- According to the FEC website, on October 2, 2020, Suzanne Cheryl DeVos gave two contributions to Tim Kelly for Congress in the amount of $2,800.00 each
- The total contribution from Suzanne Cheryl DeVos to Tim Kelly’s campaign committee is now $5,600.00, exceeding contribution limits
“I am not at all surprised that members of the DeVos family are attempting to illegally influence an election by breaking the law,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “This move is straight out of the DeVos playbook. They have bought their way into power in Michigan and in DC. And as much as they may have convinced themselves of such, the DeVos’ are not above the law and we will hold them accountable.”
Four DeVos family members including Doug DeVos and Suzanne Cheryl Devos contributed to Tim Kelly for Congress on October 2, 2020 for a total of $16,800. Of that total amount, $5600 is in violation of the FECA.
“We will send a powerful message to the DeVos family on November 3 when we return Dan Kildee to Congress so he can continue to work for the people of the 5th Congressional District,” said Barnes.
