LANSING– This week, the Michigan Democratic Party will be releasing The DeVos Diaries, a series on the Trump-DeVos education agenda and its devastating impact on Michigan teachers, students, and public schools. Today, the series will highlight how the Trump-DeVos Department of Education is putting wealthy private schools first during a pandemic as they divert money from low-income public schools.
Guidance recently released by the Trump-DeVos Department of Education would divert CARES Act relief money originally meant for low-income school districts to wealthy private schools through changes in Title I procedures. According to educators the guidance is, “in conflict with the clear intent of the CARES Act” and represents the latest attempt by DeVos to manipulate CARES Act school relief money to undermine public schools and force the Trump-DeVos agenda on public education.
“Time and again Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos have manipulated the CARES Act to put their ideological agenda first, devastating low-income school districts while helping wealthy private schools,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “The Trump-DeVos education agenda is a devastating attack on public education in Michigan as they put the rich first and working families last.”
