LANSING — Following the news that Matt DePerno, a former state attorney general candidate and long-time Trump ally who’s been charged with multiple felonies, announced his candidacy for the state Supreme Court, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes released the following statement:
“Matt DePerno is unfit to serve on the highest court in the state. DePerno’s MAGA bonafides, his felony charges, and his disdain for democracy and reproductive freedom make him a direct threat to our legal system. The stakes have never been higher for these Supreme Court races – if Trump’s MAGA loyalists are elected, they will do everything in their power to drag our state backward. We must work to elect Justice Bolden and Kimberly Thomas to the bench to ensure we can continue to build on the progress we’ve made.”
Earlier this year, the Michigan Democratic Party Executive Committee endorsedJustice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas for Michigan’s Supreme Court:
Justice Kyra Harris Bolden was appointed by Gov. Whitmer to the bench and has continually served our great state. As the first Black woman to serve in the Michigan Supreme Court, Bolden is a trailblazer who is committed to ensuring equal access to justice, applying the law without fear or favor, and treating all who come before our state’s highest court with dignity and respect.
Kimberly Ann Thomas is running for an open court seat on the Michigan Supreme Court and will bring her broad base of legal experience and a new voice of integrity and fairness to the court. Thomas is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer, and law professor at the University of Michigan Law School where she co-founded and directs the Juvenile Justice Clinic. She also served on the bipartisan Michigan Task Force on Juvenile Justice Reform and is committed to equal justice for all Michiganders.
