STATEMENT: Michigan Dems Chair Calls Out Rep. Tom Barrett for Vote to Close Social Security Offices

LANSING — During a budget markup today in the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Republican Congressman Tom Barrett abandoned Michiganders on Social Security in his district, voting against Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet’s amendment to prevent any funds from being used to shut down Social Security field offices. In response to his decision, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel released the following statement:

“Congressman Barrett’s decision to attack Social Security betrays the Michiganders who voted for him. If the offices in his district are forced to close their doors, tens of thousands of recipients may not get their checks — forcing Michiganders to choose between groceries and rent.

“Congressman Barrett is in lockstep with a Republican agenda that is dead set on taking money out of Michiganders’ pockets so that billionaires can profit. Trump and Republicans are waging war against working families across our state, but we are proud to have Michigan Democrats standing up against them.
