LANSING — Mike Duggan is still refusing to condemn Donald Trump’s threats of execution and political violence, including against U.S. Elissa Slotkin, with Duggan’s spokesperson doubling down last night.
The Detroit Metro Times reported yesterday how Duggan refused to speak out against Trump’s threats during an interview with WXYZ, saying just that he’s “not going to get involved in the national debate.”
When asked by the Detroit Metro Times why he didn’t condemn Trump’s threats, Duggan’s spokesperson said that “he is running for state office, not federal office, and has made it his practice in this campaign to stick to state issues.” Duggan has previously weighed in on national issues, including defending Donald Trump’s cuts to Medicaid—making his silence even more surprising.
And in a stunning post on X last night, Duggan’s spokesperson doubled down, posting that Trump’s threats of hanging lawmakers is just “DC chaos” and that Duggan won’t be “chasing every episode” of it.
In response to Duggan’s continued refusal to condemn Trump’s threats of political violence, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:
“Donald Trump is cutting health care, costing us jobs, and threatening the rule of law, and now he’s called for one of our United States Senators to be executed. It shouldn’t be hard, but Mike Duggan’s refusal to call that out and condemn it is a revealing glimpse into his lack of character and morals.
“Trump’s threats go against everything this country stands for and every single leader across the political spectrum should be wholeheartedly condemning this behavior with every opportunity they have. Mike Duggan’s refusal to do so—and his staff now doubling down—shows that Duggan can’t be trusted to lead our state.”
