STATEMENT: MDP Announces Spencer Calhoun as New Political Director

LANSING — Today, the Michigan Democratic Party announced that Spencer Calhoun will serve as the party’s new Political Director.

Calhoun previously worked as an organizing specialist for the Michigan AFL-CIO and is a former member of the Teamsters 243 & UFCW. In 2024, Calhoun served as Campaign Manager for Kimberly Ann Thomas’ successful campaign for the Michigan Supreme Court, and in 2025 managed Chair Hertel’s campaign for MDP Chair. Calhoun is one of the youngest elected officials in Michigan, serving as a City Commissioner in Mount Clemens, and was recently named as a 40 Under 40 rising star in Macomb County.

“I am proud to announce Spencer Calhoun as the Michigan Democratic Party’s Political Director,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel. “Spencer has been a tireless fighter for working families, and as the youngest City Commissioner in Mount Clemens’ history, he has proven that he understands the needs of Michiganders in his community and across the state. Spencer will be an invaluable member of our team as we work to elect Democrats up and down the ballot and fight for the kitchen table issues that matter most to Michigan voters.”

“I’m thrilled to join Chair Hertel and the incredible team at the Michigan Democratic Party as Political Director,” said Spencer Calhoun. “With crucial races at every level of the ballot this year, it’s more important than ever that Michigan Democrats are engaging in communities across the state and working to build a stronger party.”
