LANSING –– The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes:
“As a nation we are facing unprecedented challenges, and these challenges require bold, effective changes that directly address our country’s most ingrained, systemic issues. We cannot miss this moment, we must meet it head on. This means working towards the passage of real, meaningful criminal justice reform that not only holds law enforcement accountable but also ends the oppression of Black communities. We can do better, we must do better.
“The GOP police reform bill put forth today was nothing but a watered-down, ineffective quick-fix meant to simply pay lip service to activists and leaders who are fighting tirelessly for long-term, sustainable solutions to police brutality.
“We as Americans deserve better than the flawed and partisan gamesmanship of the McConnell-run Senate. I have full confidence in Senators Stabenow and Peters’ abilities to work in bipartisan ways to finally bring about meaningful legislation that so many have been fighting for.
“There is no doubt that they understand the importance of this moment and have shown that they are not only committed towards finding common sense solutions – but that they will always stand up and fight for their fellow Michiganders.”
