Today, the Michigan Democratic Party held a virtual press conference with Senator Debbie Stabenow, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, and autoworker Percy Johnson to highlight Donald Trump’s erratic trade actions, his failed record on auto jobs, and Joe Biden’s plans to invest in Michigan manufacturing.
The presser comes as Trump has continued his erratic trade war, putting a 10% aluminum tariff on Canadian aluminum just one month after the implementation of USMCA. Trump has failed to stand up to China on trade while attacking allies and failing to outline a clear strategy.
“We make things and grow things in Michigan, including the best cars in the world,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow. “President Trump likes to talk about American workers but actions speak louder than words. Vice President Biden has always had Michigan’s back and will continue to support our auto industry so that we win the race to build the cars of the future.”
“The best workers in the world live right here in Michigan,” said Michigan Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich. “We put the best cars and trucks on the road, but President Trump’s reckless trade policies have done nothing but kill American jobs, hurt us at home and undercut our place in the global economy. The hardworking men and women of Michigan’s auto plants demand the same kind of grit, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail from the Oval Office that they put in on the assembly line every day, and we have a chance to make it right this November.”
“Donald Trump and the Republican party are anti-labor and anti-worker,” said autoworker Percy Johnson. “This erratic trade war is more of that agenda. This president talks tough and shows a lot of bluster, but what has he really done to make better trade policies and help Michigan workers? Nothing. These tariffs show he has no interest in helping the auto industry after his failed COVID response hurt our auto industry. I have friends and family suffering as a result. We have got to have a change in November.”
