Senator Ruth Johnson’s Frivolous Attack on Vote by Mail

LANSING—The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes:

“In a Senate hearing today, Sen. Ruth Johnson attacked Michigan’s vote-by-mail system, which was approved by a majority of voters in 2018. Sen. Johnson’s fake outrage about mail-in voting is nothing more than a political stunt designed to scare and confuse Michigan voters, a clear act of voter suppression.

As a former Secretary of State and Oakland County Clerk, Sen. Johnson should know that voting by mail is safe, secure and reliable, and something tens of millions of Americans, including troops serving overseas and President Trump himself, do during the elections. Sen. Johnson should also recognize that, during a global pandemic, voting by mail keeps Michiganders safe.

If Sen. Johnson is serious about ensuring the efficacy and security of our elections, she should focus on removing obstacles for our clerks to be able to efficiently process absentee ballots leading up to election day.

Senator Johnson’s attack on Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is simply doing her job by increasing access to voting, is a shameful and embarrassing waste of time and money.”
