LANSING — Last month, MAGA Matt Hall led state House Republicans in cutting $645 million in funding for critical projects across the state—including affordable housing, health care, economic development and job-training programs, support for veterans, and mental health services. Now, those same House Republicans are facing massive backlash from their constituents and embarrassingly trying to backtrack from their own disastrous cuts.
Gongwer reports that several vulnerable House Republicans are now trying to save face and backtrack on some of the cuts as they’ve now realized how they’ll impact their districts.
After seeing the intense backlash, Republicans like Kathy Schmaltz and Ron Robinson are trying to undo the consequences of their actions—but even Robinson is still trumpeting the cuts, saying they were “well-intentioned.”
In response to the embarrassing hypocrisy, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:
“This hypocrisy from House Republicans reeks, and Michiganders will see right through it. Matt Hall and his extreme Republican caucus happily cut $645 million in funding for crucial projects, but now that they’re facing extreme backlash from their constituents, they’re desperately trying to save face. The record remains clear though: House Republicans own these cuts, and Michiganders will remember in November how Republicans voted to rip away funding from crucial and life-saving projects across the state.”
