RELEASE: Michigan Dems Celebrate Beginning of Black History Month

LANSING — With Black History Month beginning today, Michigan Democrats are uplifting the impact of Black Michiganders on Michigan’s history, economy, and legacy. Under the Democratic trifecta, Michigan Democrats expanded access to the ballot box, worked to reduce maternal mortality inequities, and supported Black-owned businesses across the state.

For the start of Black History Month, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel and Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus Chair Keith Williams released the following statement:

“Each February, we are proud to celebrate Black History Month and honor the Black leaders and trailblazers who have helped make Michigan a stronger and more equitable state. Michigan Democrats know that there is no way to tell our state’s story without the long legacy of Black individuals, communities, and businesses who have helped shape and move our state forward. At every level, Michigan Democrats will continue working to protect and improve the lives of Black Michiganders across the state, this month and year-round.

“This Black History Month comes amid the backdrop of a presidential administration that is attacking Black families, while congressional Republicans are ripping away food assistance and health care from vulnerable Michiganders. Now more than ever, we must recommit ourselves as a party to advancing equity, equality, and justice for all—recognizing how far we have come and how far we still have to go. Michigan Democrats up and down the ballot remain committed to dismantling barriers to social and economic progress and ensuring Black Americans get their fair chance.”
