One year ago today, Donald Trump told farmers they were “over the hump” and a few days later said they would be doing “be doing fantastically well” in a year. In the year since, Trump has abandoned them as they suffer from his failed response to COVID-19 and his disastrous trade deal with China.
Since Trump’s remarks, Michigan farmers have been decimated with farm bankruptcies spikingby 50% as exports plummeted by over $55 billion for the year due to Trump’s disastrous trade war. Now, after Trump got rolled in trade negotiations, the Chinese government is billions of dollars behind in promised agricultural purchases while Michigan farmers continue to be devastated by a global pandemic.
“Donald Trump has decimated Michigan’s farmers, breaking his promises with a disastrous trade deal and leaving them behind with his failed response to COVID-19,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “It’s been one year since Trump told Michigan farmers they’re ‘over the hump,’ and they’re still suffering from his destructive policies.”
