Nesbitt Votes Against Bipartisan Budget As GOP Gov. Primary Goes Far-Right

Nesbitt’s vote shows just how extreme this primary is

LANSING — Republican gubernatorial candidate Aric Nesbitt was one of just five Republican senators who voted against the balanced and bipartisan state budget.

The budget includes major investments in fixing the damn roads, delivers record per-pupil funding for our public schools, protects Medicaid, and lowers costs for Michiganders; while also keeping our communities safe, increasing government efficiency, and ensuring that kids across Michigan continue to receive free school meals.

Gov. Whitmer worked with Leader Brinks, Speaker Hall, and legislators on both sides of the aisle to deliver this budget — but Nesbitt still voted no. Michigan Republican Party Chair Jim Runestad also voted no.

Nesbitt’s vote against the bipartisan budget is just the latest in his litany of far-right extremism in the state Senate — which has included voting against repealing the retirement tax, voting to keep in place the state’s now-defunct 1931 abortion ban, and voting against a resolution condemning Trump’s disastrous tax law.

“This budget is a major win for Michigan families and passed both the House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, but Aric Nesbitt knows that working across the aisle won’t cut it in this nasty Republican primary,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “Nesbitt voted against fixing the damn roads, funding public schools, and lowering costs for Michiganders. Nesbitt’s vote shows just how extreme he really is — and how far-right this primary has already gone.”
