LANSING — After spending months on the campaign trail touting the need for inflation relief, House Minority Leader Matt Hall and Michigan Republicans are poised to turn their back on the voters and vote against Governor Whitmer and Michigan Democrats’ tax relief plan which would put money directly in Michiganders’ pockets.
This development comes following a press conference this morning by Minority Leader Hall where he explicitly came out against the Lowering MI Costs bill package, introduced by Governor Whitmer and Michigan Democrats on Tuesday. The legislation is the largest tax break for working families and seniors in decades, and helps taxpayers and business owners combat rising costs.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released this statement reacting to the news from Minority Leader Hall:
“We’ve heard Republicans demand inflation relief and speak out against the retirement tax time and time again, yet when it comes time to act, they choose to play political games with Michigan families. Governor Whitmer and Michigan Democrats are keeping their campaign promises to Michiganders, delivering immediate relief to everyone across our state. We urge Minority Leader Hall and Republicans in the legislature to think twice before rejecting this historic piece of legislation. Let’s be clear, if they vote no, they should be prepared to explain to every Michigander why they’re going back on their word.”
Minority Leader Hall’s press conference today, where he made his opposition to the Democrats’ bill clear, comes on the heels of repeatedly calling for “immediate” inflation relief and denouncing the retirement tax, both key aspects of the Lowering MI Costs plan. The House is expected to vote on the bill today.
