Michiganders need to know what extremist Matt DePerno was doing during the Jan. 6 insurrection

New reporting shows the far-right Republican AG candidate met with the Trump administration as deadly riot started at U.S. Capitol

LANSING — Michiganders deserve a full accounting of Matt DePerno’s activities on Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington, D.C., as insurrectionists launched a deadly attack aimed at overturning the results of a free and fair election and subverting the will of the people.

The Washington Post is reporting that DePerno was among those radical conspiracy theorists who met with members of former President Donald Trump’s administration to devise a plan aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 election in which Trump lost to Joe Biden.

“These news reports are disturbing, and Matt DePerno needs to answer for his actions on that deadly day,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “Who was Matt DePerno meeting with? What were they talking about when the deadly insurrection started?

What role did he play in this brazen attempt to undermine democracy and subvert the will of the voters? These are just a few questions DePerno must answer to the people of Michigan.”

State Rep. Matt Maddock, who has long supported Trump and is married to Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock, was also in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6. As he is actively running to become the next GOP House leader, Maddock also needs to account for his whereabouts that day.

“Were DePerno and Maddock meeting together or with other members of the far-right wing of the Republican Party?” Barnes asked. “It’s time these extreme candidates give a full accounting of their actions.”
