Michigander and Cancer Survivor Calls Out Mike Rogers’ Health Care Plan: “A Moral Failure”

LANSING — A breast cancer survivor from Okemos is calling out failed GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers for his leaked health care plan that would lead to higher costs for millions of Michiganders and make the GOP’s health care crisis “even worse,” calling it a “moral failure.”

Last month, Bridge Michigan first reported on Mike Rogers’ leaked health care plan, which includes “ending no-cost preventive care” and “recreating a form of high-risk insurance pools” that will force Michiganders to pay higher health care costs.

According to Okemos resident Diane Holland—who lives with multiple sclerosis and relies on the ACA for her health care—Rogers’ health care plan would cause her premiums to “skyrocket even further” and would lead to more late-stage diagnoses for life-threatening conditions like cancer.

The ‘Gander: Mike Rogers’ Healthcare Plan Is A Moral Failure

  • Diane Holland is a breast cancer survivor living with multiple sclerosis. She relies on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to manage her chronic conditions and get the care she needs.
  • Her monthly premium has more than doubled since Republicans in Congress allowed ACA subsidies to expire, jumping from $124 to $252 per month.
  • Now, she fears her ability to afford that care could depend on the outcome of Michigan’s US Senate race.
  • “I already knew U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers (R-Michigan) opposes extending the subsidies that made my healthcare more affordable–but Rogers’ new healthcare plan is even more dangerous than I feared.”
  • At a recent campaign event, Rogers complained that “the sickest part of our society ends up consuming the most” healthcare, and that his solution is to separate those patients into a “catastrophic fund.”
  • I would almost certainly be shunted into one of these high-risk pools under Rogers’ plan. My premiums could skyrocket even further, and I could face coverage limits on the treatments I need to manage my condition. Many of the 6 million Michiganders living with chronic conditions could face that same reality,” [Holland said].
  • “But it gets worse. Rogers wants to end the requirement for private insurance plans to cover preventive services like cancer screenings. He said Michiganders should be fine having to bear these out-of-pocket costs.”
  • “As a cancer survivor, I find Rogers’ proposal infuriating. Cancer caught early is often treatable, but cancer caught late can be a death sentence. If people have to pay more for screenings, many won’t do it, especially those already struggling with rising costs.”
  • “This election is too crucial for people like me with chronic conditions who need access to affordable healthcare. Republicans have already caused our costs to skyrocket, but Mike Rogers’ plan would make it even worse.”
