The Detroit News: Tariffs threatening survival of small businesses
- Senate candidate Mike Rogers calls these tariffs an “absolute win” for Michigan. In a recent interview, he said they’ll help “small, little manufacturers get more work.” Unfortunately, Rogers’ political spin doesn’t match the reality on the ground for businesses like mine. […]
- But while Michigan’s business owners have been calling out for help, Mike Rogers has dismissed our economic pain, saying “the shoe is going to pinch every once in a while.”
- Despite what Rogers may think, these chaotic tariffs aren’t a minor inconvenience for Michigan’s small businesses —they’re threatening our survival.
- We need predictability to plan investments, negotiate long-term contracts and provide customers with reliable pricing. The current chaotic approach — where even the mere possibility of new tariffs sends prices soaring — makes all of that impossible.
- Michigan’s small manufacturers employ local workers, contribute to our communities and want to grow. But we don’t have armies of lobbyists or the resources to weather constant policy whiplash.
- We need leaders who understand that our success depends on stable, predictable policies that help us compete globally — not politicians like Mike Rogers who dismiss our concerns while rubber-stamping the chaos out of Washington that’s hurting our businesses.
