Michigan Senate Dems passed House bills 5207–15 in committee to protect surrogacy and reduce regulation for assisted reproduction
LANSING — Today, Michigan Senate Democrats passed the Access to Fertility Health Care Package through committee and sent it to the Senate Floor. The bills would protect fertility health care by repealing restrictions around surrogacy and ensuring the rights to those who choose assisted fertility.
Parents who use fertility treatments, surrogates, or any other form of assisted reproduction – such as IVF – deserve legal protections, and this bill will safeguard families of every kind by giving clear rights to the intended parents. This bill is a huge step forward in Democrats’ path toward achieving reproductive rights and freedoms in Michigan.
“As Republicans continue to attack and vilify reproductive care, Michigan Senate Democrats passed this bill through committee to protect all families and secure a variety of reproductive choices and freedoms for all Michiganders,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “Michigan was an outlier in our antiquated surrogacy laws, but with Democrats championing the rights of all families, we are one step closer to guaranteeing reproductive freedom for all.
“Unsurprisingly, Michigan Republicans have consistently voted against this legislation, choosing instead to attack Michiganders’ personal freedoms at every turn. From abortion to surrogacy, Michigan Republicans are a direct threat to the fundamental rights and freedoms that Michiganders hold dear.”
This legislation will repeal prior law that made Michigan the only state that criminalized paid surrogacy and will add clear links and parental rights to children born through assisted reproductive care.
