Michigan Republicans in Congress Vote Against Protecting Reproductive Freedom

As GOP leaders call to ban abortion nationally, every Michigan Republican in Congress voted against popular measures that would guarantee every American the freedom to make their own health care decisions

LANSING — Today, all Michigan Republicans in Congress running for re-election voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act that would restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land, and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act that would protect women who travel to another state to get an abortion.

“After working to overturn Roe v. Wade for decades and pushing to ban abortions with zero exceptions in Michigan, Republicans have once again shown they don’t stand with the majority of Michiganders by voting against legislation to protect reproductive freedom and access to abortion today,” said Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Alyssa Bradley. “This November, Michiganders have a choice between far-right GOP candidates attempting to criminalize abortion and advocating for forced births and Democrats who are working to protect people’s reproductive rights.”

Today’s vote comes after Republicans in Congress have increasingly called to pass a national abortion ban if they win a majority, which House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said he would support. Meanwhile, in Lansing, Michigan Republicans are  making even more radical proposals by submitting legislation that would put doctors in jail for performing abortions and even considering banning contraceptives
