Michigan Dems Celebrate Gov Signing the Reproductive Health Act — Another Step Towards Reproductive Freedom

Governor Whitmer will sign the Reproductive Health Act and repeal harmful, politically motivated Republican restrictions on abortion

LANSING — Today, Governor Whitmer signed the Reproductive Health Act into Michigan law to remove dangerous restrictions on reproductive freedom that hurt marginalized communities and obstruct access to abortion for Michiganders.

Since the overwhelming passage of Prop 3 last November, Michigan Dems have continued to fight for and expand reproductive freedom in the face of a Republican party that will do anything they can to destroy Michiganders’ most fundamental rights.

“The Reproductive Health Act increases access to abortion care across the state and strengthens reproductive freedom for all Michiganders,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “While we know there is more progress to be made, this legislation is an important step toward promoting equity and justice. The Freedom Caucus and MAGA Matt Hall’s MIGOP members have made it clear that they will undermine reproductive freedom at any chance they get, and we are so thankful that Democrats delivered this win for Michiganders to protect abortion rights for years to come.”

Many key Republican Representatives betrayed their districts by voting against RHA when their districts expressed support for reproductive freedom. These Republicans are:

  • MAGA Matt Hall – 54.5% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Jamie Thompson – 56.5% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Jim DeSana – 54.4% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Kathy Schmaltz – 55.9% of her district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Ann Bollin – 54.9% of her district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Donni Steele – 59.7% of her district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Mark Tisdel – 58.77% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Thomas Kuhn – 53.2% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Alicia St. Germaine – 58% of her district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. David Martin – 55.9% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Jerry Neyer – 55.2% of his district voted for Prop 3
  • Rep. Timothy Beson – 54.5% of his district voted for Prop 3

When Republicans voted against this historic, impactful legislation, even as their districts were loud and affirmative in support, these MAGA extremists made it clear they don’t care about Michigan values, they only care about pushing their radical agenda onto their communities. Thankfully, Michigan Democrats stand up and get the job done for what Michiganders care about most, with or without Republicans.
