Michigan Democrats Uplift LGBTQ Michiganders with New LGBTQ+ Advisory Council

Gov. Whitmer established new council to create a better, more inclusive Michigan

LANSING — Over the weekend during the Motor City Pride festival, Governor Whitmer signed an executive order establishing Michigan’s first-ever LGBTQ+ Advisory Council, an initiative to improve the health and economic prosperity of the LGBTQ+ community, and promote the countless historical and present day LGBTQ+ contributions to the state. This council will be part of Democrats’ continued efforts to boost Michigan’s economy and grow Michigan’s population by making this a state where everyone and their families can thrive.

“Michigan Democrats are fighting for our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and neighbors, not just during Pride month, but year round,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes. “While Republicans continue to fall down the rabbit hole of extremism and target some of our most vulnerable neighbors’ right to simply be who they are, Michigan Democrats are passing critical legislation to protect basic human rights, building a representative government, and proving that a more inclusive state will also bring economic prosperity. Once again, Gov. Whitmer and Michigan Democrats are fulfilling their campaign promises to our state – that everyone will have the opportunity to thrive.”

Along with supporters like the Michigan Democratic Party LGBTQ Caucus and Vice Chair Jason Morgan, Governor Whitmer is continuing her mission to promote inclusion and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community across the state. The announcement of the LGBTQ+ Advisory Council comes just a few months after Michigan Democrats signed into law an amendment to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to grant discrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community in the Great Lakes State.
