Michigan Democrats Praise Biden’s American Rescue Plan Ahead of First Lady Jill Biden’s Visit

GRAND RAPIDS — Thursday, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden will visit Grand Rapids Community College to highlight how the American Rescue Plan has helped Michigan communities recover from the pandemic and encourage Michigan residents to get vaccinated. Ahead of the visit, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“The American Rescue Plan continues to deliver for Michigan’s families — and thanks to the leadership of President Joe Biden and Governor Gretchen Whitmer, nearly 60 percent of Michiganders have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

“Yet, while Michigan Democrats work to put more money in people’s pockets and more shots in arms, Republicans in Washington are trying to take credit for a recovery plan they voted against. If Jack Bergman, Bill Huizenga, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar, and Tim Walberg actually cared about working families, they would have supported this historic recovery plan instead of playing politics with people’s lives and livelihoods.”

The American Rescue Plan has helped Michigan families by:

  • Providing over $13 billion in state and local relief to Michigan communities
  • Sending direct payments of $1,400 to over 6,378,000 adults across the state, or more than 89 percent of adults in Michigan
  • Expanding the Child Tax Credit to provide additional relief to the families of 1,970,000 children, lifting 117,000 kids out of poverty
