BATTLE CREEK–– Before Donald Trump’s desperate rally in Battle Creek, Michigan Democrats held a press conference holding him accountable for his broken promises on the economy and health care while calling him out for his pathetic attempt at distracting voters from his failures.
At the conference, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes, candidate for Michigan’s 6th Congressional District Jon Hoadley, and local elected official Rande Johnson highlighted Trump’s attacks on affordable health care and prescription drugs, and his failure to fight for Michigan working families.
“We’re standing out here today in the freezing cold for one reason: because Donald Trump has come here to Michigan in a desperate attempt to cover for his broken promises and rally his dwindling supporters in a state he sees slipping through his fingers,” said MDP Chair Lavora Barnes. “When it comes to skyrocketing health care costs and slow job growth, Trump has broken promise after promise. And the Michigan Democratic Party is fighting to make these failures some of his last. We’re working every day, putting boots on the ground and knuckles on the doors to hold this President accountable for his broken promises. It worked in 2018 when Democrats throughout this state swept into office riding a blue wave of Michigan voters who rejected this failed president. And it’s going to work in 2020.”
“In 2016 President Trump promised to bring change for the working people of Michigan. Three years later, here we are standing out in the cold without little to show,” said Jon Hoadley, candidate for Michigan’s 6th District. “We need better healthcare, long term care, and affordable prescription drugs. They haven’t gotten it done. We need clean drinking water, to hold polluters accountable, and to tackle the climate crisis. They are pretending that enough is being done. We need to fight for equality, a woman’s right to choose, ending student debt, and reforms to our criminal justice system. They have stood in the way.”
“I’m here today as a proud Democrat of over 50 years to fight for the values we believe in and to tell Donald Trump that Battle Creek rejects his broken promises and politics of hate,” said Bedford Township Supervisor Rande Johnson. “Today this city will send a clear message that we stand up for workers’ rights, for womens’ rights, and for communities of color. We’re not going to back down, we’re going to turn Calhoun County blue, turn Michigan blue, and send this failed president packing.”
