Michigan Democrats Celebrate May Jobs Report, Blast Republicans for Attempting to Stymie Economic Recovery

Following today’s strong job report, which showed that more than 2 million jobs have been created during the first four months of the Biden-Harris administration, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“Thanks to the steadfast leadership of President Joe Biden and Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan families are experiencing a record economic recovery as cases continue to decline and people head back to work. Today’s job report shows that Democrats’ American Rescue Plan has made tremendous progress in lifting up millions of struggling families and helping businesses build back stronger.

“While Republicans in Congress and the Michigan state legislature continue their brazen attempts to stymie the progress being made by President Biden and Governor Whitmer, Democrats are fighting to put more money in people’s pockets, boost vaccination rates, open schools safely, and build back an economy that works for working people.

Since the passage of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, over 60 percent of Americans have received at least one vaccine dose and unemployment claims are down 50 percent, marking the lowest level of unemployment since before the pandemic. This historic investment passed Congress with support from every Michigan Democrat, but every Michigan Republican voted against it—despite the plan including $1,400 direct payments to Michiganders, the extension of the Child Tax Credit, and billions of dollars in federal funding to help Michigan’s economic recovery.

Utilizing that federal funding, Governor Whitmer continues to lead ambitious efforts to use the federal COVID-19 recovery funding allocated to Michigan to boost mass vaccination, open schools safely, and get the Michigan economy moving again—even as the Michigan GOP continue their partisan crusade to undermine her leadership.
