The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes regarding Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s ban on open carry at the polls.
“We applaud Secretary Benson’s clear and decisive guidance regarding the issue of firearms at polling locations on November 3. Voters have the right to cast their ballots without the threat of gun violence or intimidation. As a country we have successfully conducted fair, free, secure, and peaceful elections for over 230 years, and this year should be no different. The presence of firearms at polling locations puts the safety of voters and election workers at risk on a day when we should be celebrating our hard-fought right to vote. We will continue to stand with Secretary Benson and Attorney General Nessel and their efforts to ensure that every voter can safely cast a vote and that it will be counted.”
