The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes.
“Today was supposed to be a day of promise, another step closer to the inauguration of Joseph R. Biden as the 46th President and true progressive change in this country. Instead, under the direction of the current president, it turned into a dangerous, terrifying day.
The actions of the domestic terrorists at the U.S. Capitol today has left me stunned. Today we witnessed a deadly attack on our U.S. Capitol building led by Americans, egged on by delusional rhetoric from Republicans whose beliefs in the lies of their leader is stronger than their belief in our democracy. The 2020 election has been settled. A majority of Americans spoke loud and clear. It is time for us to put the election behind us and get on with doing the people’s work. We are still living through a global health pandemic and there is much for us to do to continue to keep people safe, support our small businesses, and ensure everyone has access to health care.
Democracy is not safe right now. Knowingly lying to the people you were elected to represent is more than shameful, it is an affront to every fundamental tenet of our country. I am encouraged that the process of verifying the electoral college vote will continue as soon as it is safe for Congress to reconvene. Though we already know the outcome of this process – Biden will be inaugurated on January 20, 2021.”
