Michigan Democratic Party Statement on President Biden Signing Historic CHIPS Act Into Law

This morning, President Biden signed his historic CHIPS and Science Act into law, delivering funding to strengthen our supply chains and create thousands of good-paying jobs. Celebrating the benefits the legislation will bring to our state, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“The CHIPS and Science Act is a big deal for Michigan’s workers and manufacturers—creating thousands of good-paying jobs, helping to lower the costs of goods, investing in next-generation technology, and turbocharging American innovation by ensuring we’re not dependent on foreign countries for the materials we need. I applaud Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters and President Biden for their leadership on this important legislation, and every single Michigan Democrat for voting for it.

“While Michigan Democrats lead the way to make sure our supply chain is strong, Michigan Republicans like Reps. Bergman, Moolenaar, Huizenga, Walberg, and McClain played political games instead of voting for legislation to strengthen our economy—and we’re going to make sure voters know it.”

Here is the funding included in this once-in-a-generation legislation that strengthen America’s economy:

  • Provides $52.7 billion for American semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and workforce development.
    • This includes $39 billion in manufacturing incentives, including $2 billion for the legacy chips used in automobiles and defense systems, $13.2 billion in R&D and workforce development, and $500 million to provide for international information communications technology security and semiconductor supply chain activities.
