LANSING — While uncertified cop James Craig sidestepped multiple opportunities to be a fully licensed police officer over the final decade of his law enforcement career, he’s more than earned the title of Certified Anti-Choice Extremist.
In September, Craig said he would do “whatever I can” to ensure that Michigan does not repeal a currently dormant law from 1931 that would immediately go back into effect should Roe v. Wade be overturned.
He also committed to block any legislation seeking to repeal the law should it reach his desk as governor. The 1931 law “criminalizes abortion as manslaughter and states that providers who carry out abortions shall be guilty of a felony” — steps that even Texas’ extremely restrictive law doesn’t take. It also makes no exceptions for rape or incest.
When pressed to clarify his anti-choice comments, Craig’s campaign doubled-down on his support for the law, stating that he “is unapologetically pro-life and opposes liberal efforts for abortion on demand, late term abortions, and partial birth abortions.”
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“If only uncertified cop James Craig was as committed to keeping his word that he would complete the MCOLES process as he is to disregarding the reproductive rights of Michigan women and families. Should Roe v. Wade get overturned, he’s pledged to do everything in his power to ensure that abortion is once again criminalized as manslaughter in Michigan while making felons out of health care providers. Craig has gone above and beyond to earn today’s recognition as a Certified Anti-Choice Extremist.”
