MDP Statement on Trump’s Trip to Detroit as Costs Skyrocket Across the State

LANSING — In response to President Trump’s planned visit to Detroit next week to push an agenda that’s ripping away health care and spiking costs for working families, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel released the following statement:

“After spending months claiming that affordability was a ‘hoax’ and creating a health care crisis for Michiganders, Donald Trump is now coming to Detroit—a city he hates—to tout his billionaire-first agenda while working families suffer.

“Every single Michigan Republican, including Mike Rogers and the GOP candidates for governor, has stood in lockstep behind Trump’s disastrous agenda that’s ripping away health care, spiking costs, and hurting workers. Michiganders are feeling the effects of Trump’s economy every day—and no amount of lies or lip service by the President can make up for the fact that they have less money in their pocketbooks because of the Republicans’ price-hiking agenda.

“Detroiters remember how Trump has insulted their city before, and they’ll remember this November how Trump and Michigan Republicans caused costs to skyrocket while giving tax handouts to millionaires and billionaires.”

Michigan Republicans have supported Trump’s disastrous agenda that’s spiking costs and hurting Michigan’s economy:

  • Each of the Republican candidates for governor have supported Trump’s disastrous budget law that’s caused health care costs to skyrocket and they’ve embraced Trump’s chaotic tariffs that’ve hurt Michigan’s economy and cost the state jobs. John James cast one of the deciding votes for Trump’s budget law, he’s since dodged questions on the health care price hikes, and he even kept the door open to ending Medicaid expansion entirely in Michigan; while Aric Nesbitt called the law a “win,” Tom Leonard said ‘Yes, I support that. 100%’ when asked about cuts to Medicaid, and Mike Cox cheered the tax law’s passage.
  • Every Michigan Republican in Congress—Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, John James, Jack Bergman, John Moolenaar, Tim Walberg, and Lisa McClain—voted for Trump’s budget law that’s spiking health insurance costs and yesterday voted against extending ACA tax credits.
  • MAGA Matt Hall and his extreme Republican state House caucus have mimicked Trump as they illegally cut $645 million in funding from critical projects across the state—including affordable housing, health care, economic development and job-training programs, support for veterans, and mental health services. The cuts were deemed unconstitutional this week, further showing just how out of touch House Republicans are with working Michiganders.
