MDP Statement on Campaign Finance Violations by the ‘Committee to Recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer’

LANSING– The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement on behalf of Chair Lavora Barnes:

“Today, a complaint for multiple campaign finance violations was filed against the group behind the baseless effort to recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer. On their website and online merchandise store, the ‘Committee to Recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer’ failed to properly identify itself, in violation of Michigan disclosure laws, and violated campaign finance laws governing its financial institution, using an out-of-state credit card company in Florida for fundraising deposit instead of a Michigan bank as required by law.

In addition to being frivolous and hyper-partisan, the latest recall attempt against Governor Whitmer is now operating illegally. This is yet another example of the radical right in Michigan breaking the rules to try and stop the Governor from doing the critical work needed to keep Michiganders safe in this time of crisis. Despite this, Governor Whitmer has led Michigan through the pandemic, and thanks to her leadership, Michigan has lowered the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths week after week. Today, Michigan is one of the only states in the country on track to contain the virus. The Governor’s important work will continue, with the support of the majority of Michiganders.”
