MDP: Republicans again fail to stand up to dangerous rhetoric, extremist views at Trump rally

Consistent lies about the 2020 election are dangerous and present a continuing threat to democracy

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Former President Donald Trump repeated the Big Lie time and again at a rally on Saturday where he was joined on stage by Michigan Republican candidates Kristina Karamo, John Gibbs and Matt DePerno.

GOP candidates stood by as the former president continued to repeat long debunked conspiracy theories about the results of the 2020 election, despite official reviews and audits over months that have consistently found Joe Biden won the 2020 election.

“Continuing to live in a false reality from 2020 isn’t helping Michiganders now and it’s definitely not showing them a path forward,” said Lavora Barnes, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “Repeating the Big Lie is dangerous and presents a very serious threat to our democracy.”

Despite the lies and conspiracy theories repeated by Trump on Saturday, Gibbs, Karamo and DePerno each took time to thank the former president for inspiring their run for office.

Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson are focused on the policies and issues that really matter to Michigan’s working families, Barnes said.

“We know many Michiganders can see through this dangerous rhetoric and they’ll vote for the Democrats who have done so much to steer the state through an unprecedented period to come out even better and stronger than before,” Barnes said.
