“Here’s the reality: [John James] doesn’t know how to run state government.” – Mike Cox
“Folks know that winning requires showing up, and unfortunately, right, John James still hasn’t figured that out.” – Aric Nesbitt
LANSING — Today, the Michigan Democratic Party launched a new video featuring two-time statewide loser John James’ Republican opponents—including Mike Cox, Aric Nesbitt, and Tom Leonard—highlighting that he’s only out for himself, not fighting for Michigan.

James faced a bruising primary, where his Republican opponents routinely called him out for barely showing up on the campaign trail, failing in straw polls, and even getting into a big feud with the biggest county Republican party in Michigan. The Michigan Republican primary for governor became one of the most expensive and nastiest in the country—with bitter personal insults, lawsuits, and countless attacks flying amongst the candidates.
Democratic turnout in yesterday’s primary election was significantly higher than Republican turnout—and James even received less overall votes than when he was first nominated eight years ago in 2018.
“John James is only out for himself, but don’t just take our word, take it from his own fellow Republicans,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “Michigan Republicans aren’t enthused to vote for a two-time statewide loser who is only focused on lining his own pockets. In November, James will become a three-time statewide loser.”
